May 14 was the official birthday of Kamuzu Banda, Malawi first president, who died in 1997. Some say he was born in 1898, others say 1902, others still say 1906

I gaze at her well-pronounced figure with an inexplicable interest. She catches my gaze before I turn away. She asks me why. I keep on staring at her.

One of my many ‘grandfathers’ is an over ambitious man who, for the past years, I have known him as a man with an oversized ego. He believes that the world shouldn’t shape ideas but ideas should hover and reign over the world. While extremely short, he resists admitting the reality of his physique. He resists believing that someone younger than him could be taller than him. At fifteen, I was tall enough to tower over him. I noticed how uncomfortable I made him feel when we conversed. I couldn’t figure out why.

Chief Mourner

Gogo Sinsamala went against long honored Bawo Club tradition and made an astonishing announcement. He declared that for this particular evening, he would have to be somewhat dictatorial and demand that everyone should gather round the camp fire and enjoy the appetizing sour brew that Abiti Mwenye had fermented especially for this occasion. Disgruntled Bawo novices who had eagerly been expecting to learn the ancient and honored art from the many experts present murmured among themselves as they made their way to the great Baobab tree where Bawo Club camp fires have been hosted ever since the Great Chill of 1932.

Kamuzu-BandaOn 14th May, I join Malawians from all walks of life with all the teeming memories of the past, surging back in time to remember the official birth of Dr. Hastings Banda, first president of the Republic of Malawi, whose name got written in the books of death in November 1997. Reasons for remembering Dr. Banda are not the same for different people. To some he was almost the messiah and to others a dictator who committed many crimes against humanity.
